Sterilization

The procedures described in the previous chapters are used primarily to reduce the microbial count and maintain instrument quality. In the following chapter, the individual sterilization procedures commonly used in hospitals are described.

Sterilization means killing or eradicating all viable vegetative and persistent forms of pathogenic and apathogenic micro-organisms in materials, preparations or objects [6].

The procedures are described in detail in the basic principles defined in DIN and CEN standards as well as in the guidelines produced by the Robert Koch Institute and recommendations from specialist associations (e.g. Association for Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene). The known sterilization procedures are described below.
